Xenoparrot Puzzles September Update (v0.5.6)

Before I get to it I just wanna say: play Xenoparrot Puzzles. It's free and will severely help the development of this game. This will be the last monthly devlog, in favor of bimonthly devlogs from now on. That will enable me to stabilize the game better than I can in a single month.

What did I do this month?

Break the game largely. My bad. I refactored some code for performance improvements, which I apparently didn't test thoroughly enough. There are several bugs now. But not in performance at least...

Now for good news—

  • I added 3 levels, edited level 4 to be better, and improved the Hub level to be more flight friendly.
  • Level 8 is terrible however, in my opinion. I will redo it later.
  • I added story and hints for the new levels.

I fixed annoying things too, improving the game drastically. Those are—

  • Shrinking the death text popup
  • Stopping the joystick from being stuck when you reset
  • Fixing the problem with left handed mode.
  • Added more possible lines for the death text popup to say.
  • Created tools to help me make better levels, in response to how I didn't like level 8, which was the way it was due to my previous toolset.

And that's this month's work.

Moving Forward

Moving forward I'll be fixing all of the bugs I made, bringing this game to a stable state once again. I will also likely remove the browser playable version until it can be made to work. In addition once the levels for Chapter 1 are complete I will overhaul the game's art to be more consistent all around. That is a big undertaking so I'll only do it once everything else is done. The test art I've done is looking like a promising improvement.

I am still enjoying developing this game, this same game that has taught me all about game development over these 2 years. Thanks to this game I learned code, art, tool making, habits, devlog writing, and about publishing a game to where it can be seen. These are skills that will be very useful moving forward.

Not a single person has played this game yet. That's fine. Nobody has commented on a devlog. That's fine too. The purpose of all of this goes beyond right now, to the future, when these skills and lessons can be applied to a project people may actually care about.

But as the name implies, Xenoparrot Puzzles is mostly for me. So I understand if nobody wants to help it get better.

If you actually read to this point, thank you. That means a lot. I would like to know if you read to this point. So please, leave your thoughts on this log or the game in a comment.

Until you see me again, thanks for reading.
